I received one response asking permission to link to this blog. Answer: Sure! Go ahead and publish the link. I still have many questions about the 7501. The learning process goes on. Perhaps readers can answer some of my questions or correct me where I'm wrong. Also, here is my email address so readers can contact me directly: drakeseu@gmail.com

Thanks for sharing your experiences !

Have you decided not to use the built-in GPS and so have opted for an external one? Why so? Of have I misunderstood?

Would love to hear some of your GPS experiences. It would be one of the selling points for me as I travel a lot.

Also, is it possible to use a VoIP SIP?

Any experience on that front?

Cheers

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do anything with GPS. I've tried two external units, without success. Unfortunately, I received a pre-release phone and had to download new software. If there was GPS software on the phone, after re-install it's not there now. The first external GPS unit only worked with Sony Vaio, the second one I bought was defective. I'll try to buy another external one in Prague and will post some comments when I get it working. It's my understanding that the GPS which comes with the phone requires an additional monthly payment. And it is only for the USA and Canada, if memory serves

According the European HTC website (http://www.expansys.de/htc/p_htc_item.aspx?i=149139) one can buy TomTom HTC Advantage NAVIGATOR 6 S/W Maps of W Europe DVD and load it to the phone. 111,95 EUR. Other people I know using TomTom don't pay monthly fees. Once you buy the software and maps, you have it to use.

I am familiar with other softwares that require monthly fees (e.g. Smart 2 Go).

A GPS itself, I think, is a mechanical device that can be used different navigation softwares.

I may be wrong. Probably. I don't think your problem is the external unit. In fact, maybe the are colliding with the integrated unit.

Cheers

HI, I hope you're correct. HTC has a new office in Prague. I think I'll take the device over there and try to sort out GPS. It can get expensive if you order GPS from out of country and it doesn't work with the device. I've already got one I've got to try and return to Amazon. I'm sure I'll get it sorted.

Since you are going to be there. Could you ask them about using VoIP and SIP (non Sky)?

P.S There are cheaper alternatives to skype (i.e. www.voipstunt.com). It's great.
